Behind the Cover- January
Find out the story behind this issue’s covers in www.metropolismag.com’s new blog–Metropolis POV.
Kaleidoscopes and hammers and snails, oh my! “This cover is one of dozens of designs that the art department created for the Smart Environments issue,” assistant art director Lisa Maione says. “In the end, our friend the butterfly made it to the finish line.” Associate art director Dungjai Pungauthaikan adds, “A butterfly’s metamorphosis symbolizes to a building coming to life through the people that inhabit its spaces. This cover attempts to capture the delicate nature of design and our continued interest to examine and reflect on our environment.” Creative director Criswell Lappin observes that this was a tough cover for a new team to cut its teeth on. “But I think it introduced some new approaches that will permeate the department,” he says.
