Always looking for new ways to interpret fabric, Sandy Chilewich first used Plynyl flooring to upholster small rolling ottomans for her eponymous firm. Woven on a loom, the flooring is made of vinyl strips, comes in different weaves and colors, and is sold both as sheet goods and as floor mats. “Boxes” is one of her several new patterns that are reminiscent of the 1950s.
Like many Chilewich products, Boxes is useful for both residential and commercial purposes; it is durable, stain-resistant, easy to clean, and soft in texture. Priced at $8-$10 per square foot, the floor mats are available in stores throughout the U.S., as well as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Store, while the wall-to-wall flooring may be purchased through dealers only.
