Emir Uras is a practicing architect, splitting his time between Los Angeles and Instanbul. About three years ago, he and L.A. architect Hassan Majd were looking for interesting, contemporary rugs for a joint project and couldn’t find them. And so they formed nu.
nu’s products are hand woven in Turkey, and are made entirely with vegetable dyes. Uras’s Labyrinth rug is made of alternating white and black sheeps’ wool. “It takes about a day to make,” Uras explains. “Two guys just compress it by hand.”
Not only is the practice environmentally sustainable, but it’s also keeping a dying tradition alive: Labyrinth’s makers previously made cloaks for shepherds.
