Is that an oversized bicycle wheel I see at Booth 664? No, it’s a shelving unit. But it turns out my first impression wasn’t far off: according to its manufacturer, Gyford Productions LLC, the piece was inspired by the Tour de France.
The Velo Shelves’ circular design consists of aluminum bars and free-form, textured plastic shelves suspended by stainless-steel wire. The resulting light, open piece allows the displayed items to be the focus. Tom Barber, an architect and engineer who designs the firm’s furniture (Steve Gyford designs its components), says with pride, “We have patented the system we use for these shelves.”
