ZAS Interiors<\/a>, which had\u00a0been commissioned by a high-tech company to design a space within its headquarters.\u00a0The company was looking for a wow factor and to achieve it, ZAS designed a lecture space that could double as a gallery. The centerpiece was to be a curving, monolithic, white feature wall with acrylic display\u00a0cases. The design was by no means simple,\u00a0and Eventscape soon realized that the many double curves meant that sprayed applications such as \ufb01berglass or MDF wouldn\u2019t provide the surface the team desired.<\/p>\n\u201cWe started leaning towards Corian for\u00a0a few reasons,\u201d says one of Eventscape\u2019s designers, Graham O\u2019Brien. \u201cIt has a good pedigree for architectural use. It\u2019s a fairly established material in terms of a \ufb01nished surface in high-traf\ufb01c spaces. On top of\u00a0that it has this wonderful quality\u2014it can\u00a0be thermoformed.\u201d<\/p>\n

This aspect was especially appealing because ZAS wanted a completely smooth surface. \u201cUnlike \ufb01berglass, where the quality of the surface is dependent on the smooth-ness of the mold you\u2019re spraying it into, Corian is forgiving in terms of what it can\u00a0be draped over. It doesn\u2019t translate every bump on a mold,\u201d O\u2019Brien says.<\/p>\n
This was the \ufb01rst time Eventscape had used Corian for such a large project\u201432\u00a0feet of smooth curving wall surface within\u00a0a 12-foot-wide area. Sixteen sheets (2,112 pounds) were used in construction. Unveiled in September, the \ufb01nal result is much more than a wall; it\u2019s a showcase unto itself.<\/p>\n
Composition<\/strong><\/p>\nEventscape used 16 sheets of Corian\u2014a nonporous surface material composed\u00a0of one-third acrylic resin and two-thirds natural minerals\u2014to build the feature wall.<\/p>\n
Properties<\/strong><\/p>\nThe material is easily cleaned, shows solid color all the way through, and has good fire ratings. The thermoforming created\u00a0a completely smooth surface.<\/p>\n
Applications<\/strong><\/p>\nThe feature wall is part of a newly designed office space, a deviation from the more traditional uses of Corian\u00a0in countertops and wall panels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
