Graduate students in industrial design, architecture, and communication design are traversing disciplinary boundaries, and stepping out of the cocooned world of the design school to take on some heavy challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some more nuanced, fully resolved prototypes and concepts, in various shapes and sizes, and designed for very diverse situations and communities, but with one thing in common\u2014they\u2019re ambitious, and they\u2019re ready to be implemented.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/39725415\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/14935\"><strong>Leen Sadder,<\/strong><\/a><strong><br \/>\nMFA Design, School of Visual Arts, New York<br \/>\n<\/strong>How to get women in Lebanon to talk to each other about health and sexuality, freely and confidentially? Use the metaphor of a ladies room. <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/14936\">Beinetna<\/a> (meaning &#8220;between us&#8221; in Arabic) is a Beirut-based youth initiative, a private online platform where girls can ask a simple question, and spark off an anonymous conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/14937\">Dafi Reis Doron<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<br \/>\nMA Design Products, Royal College of Art, London<br \/>\n<\/strong>Doron\u2019s stools may look upholstered, but they are actually solid blocks that have been cut using a CNC machine. Doron puts together layers of leather and wood veneer, and then cuts through the layers to reveal patterned surfaces that are a combination of the materials, providing a new way of applying materials in furniture.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/36095675\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/14938\"><strong>Cameron Zotter,<\/strong><\/a><strong><br \/>\nMFA Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore<\/strong><br \/>\nWith a website, and a book of 30 small projects, Zotter demonstrates the application of hacking to graphic design\u2014he calls it the intersection of \u201cart, design, technology, and misuse\u201d\u2014suggesting subversive prompts and tools for creativity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sdg-migration-met.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/12202323\/44eefa856317cd8d5ff328e90e64b862-GregHittlerThesis001.jpg\" alt=\"GregHittler_Thesis001\" width=\"535\" height=\"312\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/14939\"><strong>Greg Hittler<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<br \/>\nM. Arch, Parsons The New School for Design, New York<br \/>\n<\/strong>In recent years, there has been a steady increase in both diabetes and obesity in the Bronx. Mainframe can be used as a stroller, or with a shopping cart attachment, so when the time comes for it to be used as a walker, we can feel less stigmatized and more confident.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sdg-migration-met.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/12202325\/3719dbe4129edccfcb48b36122c82277-DAE11cdTMaincent00017.jpg\" alt=\"DAE11_cd_TMaincent_00017\" width=\"375\" height=\"499\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/14942\">Thomas Maincent<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><strong>M. Des., Contextual Design, Design Academy Eindhoven<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Chinese developed methods to cultivate worms for silk centuries ago, but spider silk\u2014five times stronger than steel at the same thickness\u2014remains under-utilized.
