Estadio Alfredo Harp Hel\u00fa opened to much fanfare this March, at the start of baseball season, as the new home for AAA Minor League Baseball team <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/26405\">Diablos Rojos del M\u00e9xico<\/a>. The inaugural games were sold out\u2014impressive considering the venue hosts up to 21,000 spectators\u2014and drew notable figures and national heroes including the country\u2019s president, Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador; the celebrated Mexican boxer Julio C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez; and, naturally, the team\u2019s owner, for whom the stadium is named.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60440\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/26406.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60440 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/26406.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong> Courtesy Rafael Gamo<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stadium is a display of national pride as well, with a design and layout that hint at the country\u2019s long history. \u201cThe procession from the stadium grounds into the ballpark alludes to climbing an ancient Mesoamerican temple,\u201d explains Gonzalez Pulido. \u201cAs the spectators approach the grand entrance, they encounter six truncated pyramids.\u201d Batten-like precast concrete panels that integrate volcanic rock clad the latter, evoking the original dark tones of the nearby ancient pyramids. Additionally, the volumes\u2019 striking slatted design filters incoming sunlight while facilitating fresh air ventilation\u2014both of which are efforts that contribute to the project\u2019s sustainability goals. And a ring just inside the entrance connects all seating sections while keeping sightlines open toward the field, which in turn maximizes sunlight and air for every seating area.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60441\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/26407.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60441 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/26407.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1350\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong> Courtesy Rafael Gamo<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas pre-Hispanic architecture inspired the stadium\u2019s the lower levels, the roof is a statement on contemporary innovation and engineering. Right off the bat\u2014no pun intended\u2014visitors will notice that, unlike the typical rounded-corner roofs that outline most baseball diamonds, this stadium\u2019s canopy is angular, faceted, and dynamic, forming a shape that\u2014fittingly\u2014recalls a devil\u2019s pitchfork. It appears to float, but it&#8217;s actually mounted onto the truncated pyramid roofs via trusses and pin connections. Achieving such a structure in a seismic zone with difficult soil conditions proved challenging, but the architects pulled off the feat by tweaking the weight of each roof module and utilizing the largest crane in the world to assemble them. Its PTFE textile material reduces some structural weight, provides shelter and shade, and draws the eye with its translucence.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60442\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/26408.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/26408.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Courtesy Rafael Gamo<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than just presenting a handsome backdrop for baseball games, the stadium functions as a center for culture, community, and commerce. \u201cSuccessful spaces must encourage strong social engagement, incorporate Mexican traditions, and respect existing natural conditions,\u201d says Gonzalez Pulido. Situated within the city\u2019s Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City park\u2014home of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/26253\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1968 Summer Olympic Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the project reclaims underutilized land in a relatively poor neighborhood. With a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/26254\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formula One racetrack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and plenty of open spaces, the park has the potential to draw visitors of every background\u2014including the affluent kind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stadium has already created jobs and vendor opportunities for locals, and plans are in place to develop a weekend market for additional vendors and makers to sell their wares.
