When architect Jay Siebenmorgen of international architecture firm NBBJ first arrived on Jiangxing Island in Nanjing, China ten years ago, \u201cthere was nothing there. It was basically farmland,\u201d he recalls. Though centrally located on the Yangtze River just four miles from Nanjing\u2019s central business district, the island was principally known for its grape-growing before 2009 when the Chinese government resolved to urbanize.<\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0the first major development, a\u00a0nine-building campus\u2014known as the Xin Wei Yi Technology Park on the renamed Nanjing Eco Hi-Tech Island\u2014exemplifies not only China\u2019s rapid pace of industrialization but an ambitious commitment to sustainability. Yet the design concepts\u00a0were\u00a0equally\u00a0inspired by the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cNanjing actually was the capital for many dynasties before World War II,\u00a0so bringing local history was important, especially in Chinese government planning review,\u201d explains\u00a0Nancy Yin,\u00a0NBBJ\u2019s\u00a0Asia projects director. \u201cThey will always ask, \u2018What\u2019s the meaning of this building in relation to our city?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

For the project\u2019s\u00a0anchor, a\u00a0nearly 260,000-square-foot exhibit hall,\u00a0the architects took inspiration from\u00a0the\u00a0nearby Zhong and Stone Mountains for eight pitched roof forms, each affixed\u00a0with a large\u00a0tubular\u00a0oculus\u2014dubbed a \u201clight cannon\u201d\u2014that\u00a0helps\u00a0naturally illuminate\u00a0the center of a building with deep floor plates. Large overhangs\u00a0are\u00a0a nod to traditional Chinese pagoda architecture\u00a0and also\u00a0provide passive shading.<\/p>\n

The second stage of the project, an octet of office\u00a0and laboratory\u00a0buildings, were inspired by the\u00a0Fujian\u00a0Tolou Earthen Structures, a UNESCO world heritage site: a series of multistory\u00a0ancient\u00a0masonry architecture\u00a0with open central courtyards\u00a0that could hold up to 800 families, utilizing prevailing breezes and stacked ventilation to move air through the massive buildings.\u00a0Each of the Xin Wei Yi Technology Park\u2019s eight\u00a0glass-clad\u00a0Office Research Buildings feature large interior courtyards and landscaped roofs.<\/p>\n

To\u00a0enhance this natural ventilation\u00a0and\u00a0meet the client\u2019s ambitious sustainability goals\u2014the project\u00a0received the highest level in China\u2019s Three Star green building rating system\u2014the\u00a0buildings are lifted off the ground by a story or more, which not only helps maximize green space on the ground floor but even increases wind speeds to aid natural ventilation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shaded space underneath the building cools the air, and then the air is pulled up and through,\u201d Siebenmorgen says. \u201cIn the good seasons, they can passively open up the building as much as possible.\u201d\u00a0The exhibition hall also achieves energy efficiency 30 percent beyond code requirements with the help of a geothermal heating pump. The buildings\u2019 green roofs and\u00a0ground-level landscaping, designed in collaboration with New York\u2019s SCAPE Landscape Architecture, harness and treat all rainwater that falls onsite.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Office Research Buildings\u2019 trapezoidal forms not only help maximize daylight but relate to the\u00a0development\u2019s\u00a0surrounding\u00a0car-free\u00a0pathways.\u00a0\u201cThere was a concept of a tree branch that goes through the site,\u201d Siebenmorgen explains. \u201cAs a result you have these three or five-sided urban rooms based on how they\u2019re sited.\u00a0You never really see through the entire site when you\u2019re there, and that\u2019s intentional.\u00a0It creates this constant visual cue or attraction to pull you through the site.\u201d<\/p>\n
