V2X should automatically alert drivers to traffic congestion, dangerous conditions, traffic light timings, and other road conditions. In the future, it will also help enable Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) to coordinate their movements. The V2X system, which Bosch says works with technologies from multiple countries and manufacturers, uses Bosch hardware and software from Portuguese startup Veniam.\u00a0<strong>Courtesy Veniam<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Yesterday, <em>Metropolis<\/em> reported how we can avoid a <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25085\">dark future<\/a> of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs): If different transportation systems (AVs, bikeshares, buses, subways, etc.) learn to digitally coordinate multi-modal trips for users, then cities might finally break from automobile dependence. However, that future (and other smart city dreams) will rely on a complex-yet-invisible technology: 5G wireless.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25086\">5G<\/a> is the next generation of cellular network, one that will (at its most basic level) enable cellular signals to carry far more data with greater speed and reliability. While that will mean faster data streams to your smartphone, the implementation of 5G networks will also serve as a tipping point for many mobility and smart city technologies. \u201c5G is one of those enabling, transformative technologies,\u201d said Davie Sweis, VP of global business and head of information technology at <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25087\">Bosch\u2019s American division<\/a>, at a CES panel today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51137\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51137\" src=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/veniam_2-courtesyveniam.jpg\" alt=\"ces 2019 smart city 5G\" width=\"900\" height=\"510\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Courtesy Veniam<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So what exactly makes 5G so revolutionary as compared to 3G or 4G? It&#8217;s a question of speed. &#8220;Urban mobility, smart cars, AVs\u2014[for these] we need millisecond response times\u201d that are also \u201cultra-reliable,&#8221; said Sweis. 5G can deliver a scenario where an AV is communicating with road sensors, stoplights, other AVs, even pedestrians and biker riders, making split-second navigation decisions that could avoid collisions or make trips faster. (Automotive manufacturers call this capability \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25088\">V2X<\/a>,\u201d or vehicle-to-everything communication.) Future scenarios that involve seamless multi-modal trips\u2014such as those\u00a0<em>Metropolis<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25085\">reported<\/a>\u00a0on yesterday\u2014will probably rely on 5G.<\/p>\n<p>5G equally applies to the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that are slowly embedding themselves in the urban fabric. Cities are already testing sensors that track air quality, noise levels, temperature, and pedestrian activity\u20145G would be the platform those sensors use to relay their information. 5G could similarly enable <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25089\">sensors inside buildings<\/a> that track energy usage, air flow, occupancy, and a host of other variables.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51138\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51138\" src=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/18c0932_01-courtesydaimler.jpg\" alt=\"ces 2019 smart city 5G\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bosch and Daimler are partnering to launch an autonomous vehicle (AV) ride hailing service in San Jose, California in the second half of 2019. <strong>Courtesy Daimler<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>There is, however, one looming challenge: \u201cWho\u2019s going to be able to adopt 5G first? Typically, it will be those individuals who can afford it,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/25090\">Sherrell Dorsey<\/a>, a tech journalist and social entrepreneur, at another CES panel. Rural or low-income communities will probably get 5G last, creating a \u201ctech divide\u201d that may last for years. Such a divide is no trivial matter. In communities that rely on smartphones as their main access to the internet, the delay may affect their access to information and services. It may also disadvantage rural or peripheral regions hoping to attract tech-focused businesses.<\/p>\n<p>5G will start to appear in select cities this year as cellular providers install new antennas, modems, and software. Widespread 5G coverage will be a reality by approximately 2025 at the latest, according to some estimates.
