than Boston\u2019s Seaport District. Fifteen years ago, it was a series of windswept parking lots; today it is a lively urban nexus with block after block of office, residential, hotel, and cultural buildings with more on the way. The Seaport, technically part of South Boston, hums day, night, and weekends with locals and tourists alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">But there are two major problems, one aesthetic and the other environmental. <em>Boston Globe<\/em> architecture critic Robert Campbell, and others who opine on buildings, complain of the large number of banal glass boxes that make up the district\u2019s new architectural assemblage. The firm has designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sasaki.com\/projects\/10-world-trade\/\">Ten World Trade Center<\/a>, with swooping geometric forms that eschew the orthogonal orthodoxy of its neighbors. Furthermore, the firm has been a key consultant on studies focusing on climate change resiliency in the Seaport District and throughout the city, chiefly as part of a team behind Climate Ready Boston, published in 2016 by former Mayor Martin J. Walsh\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Ten World Trade Center was designed both for architectural novelty and resilience. \u201cMassport, which controls the site, and Boston Global Investors, the developers, wanted something different,\u201d said Victor Vizgaitis, Sasaki principal and the firm\u2019s chair of architecture and interior design. \u201cDesign was part of the early discussions.\u201d As a means of climate resiliency, \u201cBoth the lobby and infrastructure that you usually see at ground level are raised,\u201d Vizgaitis continued. \u201cBut the lower portion of the building, defined by structural arches, is a civic space open to all 24\/7.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\" style=\"object-fit:cover;object-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/94711_02_N38_large-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Sea Change Boston Sasaki\" class=\"wp-image-86519\" width=\"1023\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/94711_02_N38_large-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/metropolismag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/94711_02_N38_large-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><figcaption>Sasaki is no stranger to Boston&#8217;s sea level rise problem. Courtesy Sasaki <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">The architect described the building, which will be a multi-tenant office, as being \u201clike the section of a cone, with curtain walls that curve and flair outward. It\u2019s a structural engineer\u2019s dream because it\u2019s so different.\u201d Boston-based Thornton Tomasetti were the structural engineers. Construction of the building is expected to start in the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">\u201cHow do you protect the district while not cutting people off from the water\u2019s edge?\u201d asked Zachary Chrisco, another Sasaki principal and civil engineer who was involved in preparing Climate Ready Boston. \u201cIt\u2019s complicated. So many entities, public and private. But there\u2019s the common goal of trying to protect the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">Richard McGuinness, deputy director for climate change and environmental planning at the Boston Planning and Development Agency, put rising waters in a historical perspective. \u201cPeople need to realize that Boston has more than 5,000 acres of created land,\u201d he explained that the city grew by filling in parts of Boston harbor with earth, rubble, and occasionally, trash, creating more real estate on which to build. Courtesy Sasaki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">\u201cWhen developers apply for approval, we make sure their project is ready for sea level rise,\u201d McGuinness continued. \u201cFor 2070, it\u2019s actually predicted to be 36 inches of sea rise and 4 inches of land sinking. That\u2019s the way it is with created land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">One architectural element that is going to be used extensively in the Seaport District is the berm, which McGuinness described as a cross between a seawall and a levee. Architects will be able to use their creativity to design these however they want, he explained. The key is that they be high enough and strong enough to withstand not just sea rise but also Nor\u2019easters, which are the region\u2019s most frequent storms. \u201cA strong Nor\u2019easter slams water into Boston Harbor,\u201d he said, \u201cand we\u2019ve got to protect these buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-regular\">For his part, Sasaki\u2019s Vizgaitis is focused not just on resiliency and sea rise but how Ten World Trade Center works architecturally and in relation to the urban fabric around it: \u201cThe idea of the public realm was paramount.
