Pre-Design Phase

Set Goals

Set Your Own Goals and Targets

Pick a method or mix of methods from below to set sustainability goals for the project depending on your resources and the client’s own goals:

  • Set simple sustainability goals. Examples: Avoid specifying PVC, Create a Zero Waste Project.
  • Identify the top tier of products by volume, and talk to clients about lowering embodied carbon on those
  • Aim to reduce carbon on the top 5-10 products by volume. Example: For most commercial tenant improvement projects, this would include flooring, furniture, and ceilings.
  • Set a goal for a minimum number of salvaged/reuse products on the project.
  • Find out what CLF baselines are relevant to your products, then use EC3 to find products with lower GWP.
  • Set a carbon budget for the entire project and make sure that Interiors have a percentage of the budget (alongside MEP and Core & Shell).

Set Goals with Clients

Over the course of a few meetings or charettes, establish project goals with clients, design team, contractor, specifiers, major manufacturers, and dealers. Agree on specific metrics (GWP, Recyclability, Certifications, Declarations) that products must meet.
