ERG International Builds Carefreely Into Every Seam and Surface
Lounge seating, tables, and banquettes leave ERG International’s factories in Oxnard, California, and Dallas built for a lifetime of use, the work of a family-run manufacturer now in its 45th year. A recently unveiled brand expression distills its ethos into a single line, “Carefreely doesn’t mean carelessly,” with the company taking on the engineering, service, and support behind every project.
The refresh offers a bolder articulation of who the business has always been: a maker able to turn ambitious concepts into finished furniture. “Carefreely is really an invitation to designers: dream bigger, explore the idea and know that we’ve got your back,” says Anissa Scroggin, director of sales and marketing at ERG International. Because everything is produced in-house, a client who needs a piece in a different size or material, or something entirely custom, can work through the details directly with the people building it. “Keeping manufacturing here keeps us close to the process, to our craftspeople and ultimately, to our customers,” Scroggin says. “It gives us the flexibility to respond to an idea rather than asking a designer to fit their idea into a box.”

Out of Sight
Flexibility is designed into ERG International's seating from the start, and Raven, its bestselling collection, shows how far it can extend, spanning banquettes in three back heights, modular units in straight and curved forms, wood or metal legs or a plinth base, and privacy panels that help divide open floor plans. Development begins well ahead of manufacturing, as the team maps out the layouts and combinations a space might call for and what each piece must be engineered to support, then moves through prototyping and refinements focused on durability and on avoiding unnecessary material and waste.
An expert team in California builds each frame by hand from multi-ply hardwood, using tongue-and-groove construction so it keeps its strength over time. “The person who ultimately sits down may never see any of that,” Scroggin says. “And neither should the designer have to worry about it. All that invisible care is what makes the finished experience feel effortless.”

On the Surface
Beyond any single collection, ERG International’s commitment to handling the complexity of a project carries through to upholstery, where specified fabric is fitted to everything from the Darby lounge chair to the Nikki bench and the Verona banquette. Plaids, stripes, and large-scale repeats leave very little room for shortcuts, so the team calculates yardage and thoughtfully places each design. “Attention matters at every step, of course but pattern matching is where our team shines and makes the difference,” Scroggin says. “We like to think our attention to matching is pretty unmatched.”
By the time a piece reaches its setting, the planning, skill, and patience behind the work have been absorbed into the upholstery itself. A plaid runs true, a stripe holds its line, and the fabric looks as considered on the frame as it did when first chosen. “It’s another example of Carefreely in action: we obsess over the details so the designer can enjoy the big picture,” she says.
Laminate, wood veneer, solid surface, and FENIX round out the offering, a lineup ERG International fully reimagined last year. New options are chosen with an eye on color, material, and finish trends, and each must also meet the company’s expectations for durability and performance, with a fresh review planned every few years. The design team selects the final colorways with the entire palette in mind, balancing warm and cool neutrals and brighter accents with tonal complements across the range, so the four can be layered with as much or as little coordination as a project calls for. “We do the work of making sure everything plays well together and designers get to decide how they want to play with it,” Scroggin says.

The Long Run
A lifetime warranty covers each product ERG International makes, and when something needs fixing, the company repairs or replaces it. A guarantee of such length shapes the approach to a design from the earliest stages of development. “We’re not building for the install, we’re building for everything that comes after it,” Scroggin says. Durability and the potential to restore or refresh a chair or banquette both factor into construction, extending each one’s useful life. Longevity also figures into ERG International’s sustainability efforts, since upholstery and finishes naturally show wear over time without always signaling the end of the furniture they cover.
The freedom promised to designers in ERG International’s new line ultimately depends on how a piece holds up, and on who answers when it needs attention. “Carefreely is knowing we’re still here after the furniture leaves our factory,” Scroggin says.
