Gensler Product Sustainability Standards

The Gensler Product Sustainability Standards (GPS) is an open-source framework that helps architects, designers, manufacturers, and clients identify and specify healthier, lower-carbon building products. Created to address a fragmented landscape of more than 100 certifications, eco-labels, and disclosure systems, GPS provides a clear, data-driven roadmap for evaluating high-impact building materials.

Launched in 2023 and implemented across Gensler projects in 2024, GPS established measurable sustainability criteria focused on embodied carbon, material health, circularity, transparency, and responsible sourcing. In January 2025, Gensler introduced GPS v2.0, expanding product categories, and strengthening performance benchmarks to reflect evolving industry priorities.

Today, GPS has vetted more than 10,000 products and trained more than 2,500 designers and manufacturers across the architecture and design ecosystem. By combining achievable baseline requirements with aspirational market differentiators, GPS encourages manufacturers to innovate while simplifying sustainable material selection for project teams. At scale, GPS has the potential to reduce embodied carbon by up to 341,000 metric tons annually.

As an open-source initiative, GPS extends beyond Gensler projects, serving as a catalyst for industry-wide change and accelerating the adoption of lower-carbon, healthier, and more transparent products across the built environment.
