These Rugs Draw Inspiration from the Sea
Andrew Kline and Ruoxi Wang’s collection of handmade Shore rugs for Warp & Weft is influenced by the colors and materials of the Nantucket Coastline
It’s little wonder that designers often draw inspiration from the oceanfront, with its plenitude of organic materials and range of colors. In an attempt to give form to the patterns of the sand and sea surrounding Massachusetts’s Nantucket island—a frequent muse for Andrew Kline, design director at New York City-based Workshop/APD— the Atlantic rug collection for manufacturer Warp & Weft evokes wave patterns and pathways in the tall beach grass, as one might see from a seaplane. “We’re interested in products that show the hand of the maker,” says Kline, who collaborated with his colleague Ruoxi Wang on the collection. Executing roughly 200 hand knots per square inch, artisans complete about eight Shore rugs per year. Each one is customizable, with multiple color, shape, size, and material options, and also has unique variations that depend on how fibers are tied.
