Nahoko Koyama wanted to make a lampshade out of a sombrero. Fortunately for us, that didn’t quite work out, as she got distracted by a felt hat body. “I realized this shape is more elegant,” the Exeter-based designer says. A hat body, the basic working shape that starts the process to fully realized hats, is cut up into various patterns—like butterflies—and placed over a low-energy fluorescent coil. The effect is one of transparency and opacity, the heavy felt opening up very so often for a glimpse at the deceptively bright bulb. The Delight Lampshade, part of the Hat Trick collection, retails for $120.
