Be a Merry Mulcher
Get in the post-holiday spirit and regift to Mother Earth
Get in the post-holiday spirit and regift to Mother Earth. Yesterday morning at RockefellerPlaza, in the shadow of the 84-foot Norway spruce Christmas tree, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe announced the 12th annual MulchFest.
This two-day event (Saturday, January 5th and Sunday, January 6th) gives New Yorkers the opportunity to recycle their holiday-weary needle-shedders into wood chips that can be taken home for personal use or donated to New York’s greenspaces. There are 85 locations in the five boroughs where green-minded citizens can drop off the trees.
Don’t want to shlep your tree across town? For the less-motivated-yet-still-good-intentioned, the Department of Sanitation will pick up trees curbside and deliver them to MulchFest sites now through Wednesday, January 16th.
The Rockefeller Christmas Tree won’t be spared from the wood chipper, either. The 8-ton holiday decoration—on view in all its LED-light covered glory until January 6th— will be stripped of its branches and turned into mulch for city parks. The trunk will be milled into lumber and donated to Habitat for Humanity.
