Designed Conservation is a collaboration between the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and Savannah’s Growing Hope of Union Mission, a homeless advocacy and outreach group. SCAD students conducted extensive research into the plight of the homeless, producing three design solutions that address various aspects of the undomiciled: the Urban Camper, for example, is a sort of retrofitted chaisse lounge, with an attached tent, that directly tackles the problem of life on the street; the other solutions (a bunk bed and a single) address needs inside homeless shelters. All three designs use common, off-the-shelf materials and include detailed blueprints, free of charge.
