Out of the Water:
A library and community center in New Orleans reinvents itself in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center is a new library that adjoins a restored historic house that was originally built in 1917. The new library and renovated house create a new place with a nurturing relationships between natural water systems, interior spaces, and the community while creating a civic “neutral space” in the heart of the neighborhood.
Dual Mode:
The UCLA Powell Library, a 1964 structure designed by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick E. Emmons, has been restored and updated to bring the analog and digital worlds together. Combining the needs for a traditional library space with the digital, collaborative, and wireless modern campus was the primary design challenge. Exhibits, lounges, street-like programming, and other means of creating connection and information sharing are some of the answers.
Learning Objectives:
— Understand how to preserve historical legacies while functioning within an increasingly digital world and addressing post-disaster challenges
— Learn about storm water infrastructure and other sustainability systems
— Learn how spaces and community can affect building design and intent
—Understand how architects can play a role in creating communal places for communities with highly specific needs
