Andreu World
BIO Thermopolymer
For Andreu World, BIO® thermopolymer represents the embodiment of the company philosophy in a firm statement of intent to achieve circularity throughout its design and production system. Its origin lies in the decision to take on a new challenge in the use of plastics. The company has been a pioneer in the use of 100% FSC wood in its entire offering and has also distinguished itself through its constant investment in technological research and development, complemented by the promotion of a sustainable work culture, in which the know-how of artisan cabinet makers and upholsterers is passed down from one generation to the next. This is the reason why internationally renowned designers, such as Patricia Urquiola, have collaborated with the company for years.
Andreu World has established very close relationships with designers, allowing the company to continue learning and improving together. When the company was working with her on the design of a new armchair in September 2019, it was Patricia who at one point encouraged us not to settle for just making another seat for the catalog and to aspire to take a big step toward sustainable innovation. The company and designer had an intense debate about the possibility of this new design being more than just a beautiful complementary piece to a successful collection like the Nuez, just another armchair like those already on the market. She asked the company to be much more ambitious and creative, to aim higher through a genuine proposal of respect for the environment, both in the choice of materials and in the production processes.
Andreu World accepted the challenge and began working seriously to achieve it, resuming a line of research on a naturally sourced, biodegradable, and compostable thermopolymer that they had begun some time earlier. During a long process, the company collaborated closely with European chemists and scientists, using a biomaterial originally created by Asians and finally applied for the first time by us in southern Europe, within the company’s own facilities. It was necessary to develop new injection systems to ensure the fluidity of the new material and implement hardware solutions that improve temperature and humidity control, since the complexity of processing it is very high. Since then, the company has been perfecting it to offer the highest guarantees.
Not only that, in parallel, Andreu World developed another thermoplastic it called Pure ECO®, which is recycled in its entirety, and adopted a textile production process called Circular ONE® to dispose of uts own fabrics from the recovery of PET plastics. All of this while taking into account the aspects of circularity and recyclability throughout the life of its products, as well as possible reprocessing and reuse at the end of their useful life. A triple challenge for the entire Andreu World team and the partner companies with which they collaborate, the company initially realized in the Nuez Lounge BIO® armchair, the first to be manufactured with 100% sustainable, naturally sourced plastic, and then in the Bolete collection, of which the company is especially proud because they pave a new path for a future of design.
