Clear Vertical Grain Sugi

Nakamoto Forestry’s Clear Vertical Grain (CVG) Sugi is a sustainable, carbon-negative alternative to old-growth cedar, and the result of nearly 80 years of deliberate forestry practice.

Defined by tight vertical grain and a clean, virtually knot-free surface, CVG Sugi represents one of the most considered expressions of Japanese cedar available today.

The quality begins in the forest. Sugi trees are cultivated from seedlings over a 70- to 80-year growth cycle and planted at nearly twice the typical density to slow girth expansion, producing tighter, more uniform growth rings. Over decades, the forests are selectively thinned and lower branches removed to yield clear lumber. Large-diameter logs are quartersawn to produce true vertical grain, and boards are air-dried for a full year before profiling, allowing the wood to acclimate gradually and reducing internal stress.

The result is a board suitable for both interior and exterior applications, with enhanced hardness, dimensional stability, and long-term durability. Available in nickel gap shiplap profiles, CVG Sugi reflects the union of modern milling technology and Japanese woodcraft refined across generations.
