Redefining the Art of the Kitchen Sink
This crucial workstation in the heart of the home also makes a striking focal point.
As homeowners shelter in place around the world, the kitchen’s role as the main hub and gathering space takes on greater importance. Whether preparing meals or carrying out daily cleaning tasks, a well-designed and easy to maintain sink is an important yet often overlooked design element.
With our collective thoughts turning to overall wellness, making sure the kitchens we design are hygienic and efficient has become top of mind. For decades, BLANCO sinks have redefined efficiency, productivity and beauty, developing materials with health and safety in mind.
A well-equipped, organized kitchen is a home’s fueling station, says Jamie Gold, a San Diego-based wellness design consultant and author of Wellness by Design: A Room-by-Room Guide to Optimizing Your Home for Health, Fitness and Happiness, which comes out in September.
“The kitchen is one of the most essential spaces, and wellness is a tremendously important component within that space to help with meal preparation and cleaning,” says Gold.
“Functionality makes kitchens easier to use and maintain, and the sink is a huge part of that. The more efficient it is, the more healthy meals people will make at home.”
With its new IKON® 33” Apron 1-3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink, BLANCO elevates kitchen ergonomics by introducing a double-bowl option to its line. Designed to make meal preparation, cooking and clean-up tasks simpler and more comfortable, this industry-first farmhouse inspired sink blends classic and contemporary styling. Constructed with BLANCO’s ultra-tough, patented SILGRANIT ® composite non-porous material that resists scratches, stains and heat, it’s also exceptionally durable.
“The kitchen sink is almost like an additional counter space; the multiple things people do in those three feet makes it a very important zone,” says Cheryl Kees Clendenon, owner and lead designer at In Detail Interiors in Pensacola, FL.
“Now especially, people are much more conscientious about hygiene in their kitchens, and one of the reasons I like SILGRANIT® is because of its anti-microbial qualities.”
Low divide sinks are more comfortable to stand over and work in, and Gold notes that during the kitchen design process, ergonomics aren’t usually top of mind, though they should be.
“The kitchen is where we do a lot of repetitive tasks, and following ergonomic principles can prevent many chronic conditions,” she says.
Because IKON’s low divide sits 5-1/2” from the sink bottom, handling large platters, pots and sheet pans is a breeze. Since a farmhouse sink is installed further forward there’s no need to lean over while working at the sink, which minimizes lower back strain.
A well-designed sink crafted from easy-care materials like SILGRANIT® helps reduce steps in the kitchen, saving time and energy, adds Gold.
Beyond improving workflow, kitchen sinks can make a commanding focal point, says Clendenon.
“We tell clients that when you’re doing an open floor plan, the SILGRANIT® sinks are the best, because they look less ‘sink-ish’ than anything else, and the new apron front is beautiful,” she says. “BLANCO has done a very good job of making this style much more contemporary and modern.”
With eight on-trend colors available – from the latest and versatile Concrete Gray to warm hues like Truffle and Café Brown or the refined Anthracite—the sink can be incorporated into any design palette, adds Clendenon.
“I love the colors, and we use BLANCO’s Metallic Gray a lot; that little bit of reflective material in it looks good and doesn’t show dirt as much.”
A complete line of optional accessories that sit on integrated ledges or in adjacent cut-out spaces —including floating grids and cutting boards, a basket strainer and a disposal flange—streamline workflow in the kitchen, adds Clendenon.
“Our sink at work has the floating cutting board, which we like because in a smaller space, it gives you more surface area. With these thoughtful accessories, clients can really make their kitchens work for them,” she says.
Because SILGRANIT® sinks are also food-safe and acid-resistant, they’re a worry-free addition to for home cooks who want leading-edge kitchen innovation.
“Our designers and engineers are driven by their focus on current trends and lifestyle habits so that they can create modern designs that seamlessly blend functionality, convenience and beauty,” says Edyta Drutis, director of brand and communications for BLANCO North America. “From our sinks and faucets to our sink accessories, we offer a wide variety of timeless options that will enhance the kitchen space for years to come.”
