As work and home environments converge, Davis Furniture continues to rise to the challenge. One year after celebrating its 75th anniversary, the fourth-generation family-owned North Carolina company has launched an understated series of seating, office, and lounge collections that suggest myriad possibilities and configurations. Davis’ current offerings blend novel aesthetic forays with intriguing variations on its iconic lines. All items are crafted from the highest quality materials with artisanal attention and detail.
Building on their successful Ginkgo collection, long- term Davis design partners jehs+laub have created Ginkgo Rope. In addition to molded plywood and welded steel bars, the newest Ginkgo iteration features a marine grade polyester rope seat and back handwoven by highly skilled artisans. The lounge, standard chair, and barstool are available in seven colors, and are tough enough for outdoor use. Also inspired by Ginkgo is Disc by jehs+laub, a multi-use seating series which sets a rounded upholstered top onto a geometric base. A stitch detail in the upholstery echoes the graphic industrial base.
Uncompromising in design, Davis invites its designers to identify and respond to new workplace opportunities. This year, jehs+laub accepted that invitation, creating SoMod. This modular lounge collection features a series of components fashioned with sculptured edges and continuous sweeping lines. Redolent of the comforts of home, SoMod’s seating and benching units rest on an inset plinth base; the units appear to float above the floor.
An additional complement to Davis’ modular lounge offering, Jonathan Prestwich, another long-term Davis design partner, has realized JP Lounge. Corporate in language, Prestwich’s latest working lounge collection features multiple seating components, integrated tables, and privacy screens that can be combined to create a broad range of office environments, ranging from “head- down” individual work pods to common spaces suitable for “campfire” side chats.
The 2020 Davis collection also features two chair solutions from Prestwich, LightWork and Kayo. A revolution in casual multi-use seating design, LightWork’s patent pending mechanism adds an unexpected movement and comfort to this classically designed work chair. This mechanism responds intuitively to the user’s weight and movements. A variety of base options broadens LightWork’s application range.
For Kayo, Prestwich envisioned a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic bent plywood chair. Available in a variety of materials and options, including an elegant solid wood base and a functional stackable metal base version, Kayo offers a diversity of choice.
Ariel, by Mario Ferrarini, is an eloquent minimalist interpretation of the multi-use chair. The Italian designer’s first collaboration with Davis, Ariel features a bent tubular frame routed seamlessly into a sculpted plywood back. A barstool option joins the collection and further extends the versatility of this alluring silhouette.
Though the refinement of European design abounds in Davis’s 2020 collection, every piece is crafted with uncompromising attention to detail in High Point, North Carolina. The offering is designed with the brand’s comfortable modern aesthetic in mind, giving designers a versatile set of tools to tailor furniture solutions to the spaces they create, whether in the home, the office, or the home office.
