Textiles have become a frontier for experimentation and a way of keeping humanity grounded in our digital age.
Every September, fabric enthusiasts come together for New York Textile Month—and the rest of us benefit from the wonderful displays of creativity and innovation.
As many of the artists featured in our September 2019 issue point out, textiles are involved at every stage of our lives—we wear clothes, sit on upholstered furniture, sleep on linens—so even those who may not understand the jargon of warp, weft, and weave structure should find ample exhibits and events to engage them throughout the month, now in its fourth edition. If you’re not in New York, the online exhibit Talent! and the excellent magalog Talking Textiles will provide plenty of inspiration. But for those who do happen to be in town, here are five highlights of the month’s events.
