Andreu World’s Forest Club Collection Is Circular Economy Ready

Designed by Phillipe Starck, the Spanish manufacturer’s new collection makes use of wooden fasteners to minimize materials and maximize recyclability.

The surest way to cut a product’s contribution to atmospheric carbon is to simplify the design—draw on a short list of ingredients and keep the final item free of component parts and mechanisms whose own manufacturing histories might add to its embodied carbon. Andreu World’s newest modular seating, developed under its 100 percent pure wood project, exemplifies this approach.

FOREST CLUB COLLECTION

Developed by the Spanish manufacturer in collaboration with French designer Philippe Starck, the collection’s plywood-framed units are inherently renewable and recyclable. But it’s the method of construction (a throwback to medieval joinery) that makes them circular economy–ready. Consider these built-in benefits:

EASE OF ASSEMBLY

Limited to two wood panels, two wood keys, and two cushions, the design earned a Best of NeoCon Award in sustainability.

HARDWARE-FREE

Special handcrafted joints, called clavets, are made of ash wood instead of metal, which enables easier recycling at the end of a unit’s life.

LEVEL 2

Production complies with this standard set by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) to track a company’s efforts at social responsibility (like providing a safe work environment) as well as user and ecosystem health.

RECYCLED FABRIC

The company’s line of Circular ONE upholstery fabric, made from recycled PET and textile waste, can be specified on cushions.

LOW CARBON

Making the upholstery’s fiber from recycled content reduces water consumption, cuts out polluting chemical compounds, and cuts the energy tied to the company’s overall production processes by 50 percent.

FSC-CERTIFIED

This collection, part of Andreu World’s 100 percent wood project, uses wood certified by the U.S. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

GREENGUARD GOLD

This certifies that the seating exceeds indoor air quality standards for chemical emissions.
