The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is gaining wide acceptance. Critics wonder, however, if the checklist approach is adequate for meeting the environmental challenges ahead. The article “Can LEED Survive the Carbon-Neutral Era?” from the November 2007 issue of Metropolis takes a close look at LEED projects around the country for demonstrations of the system’s successes and for examples of ways it has fallen short of the ultimate goal.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Participant will be able to:
— Identify at least three major criticisms of LEED
— Name at least three examples of innovation credits that “go beyond the checklist”
— Explain how an integrated design approach leads to energy savings
