Luminaries
New ideas from leading lighting designers.
Talented designers like Leni Schwendinger and Claudio Silvestrini are always trying to capture or utilize the properties of light, whether through computer screens, recessed lighting, or outdoor installations. And while the vast majority of lighting design still revolves around traditional bulbs, manufacturers like Dutch electronics giant Philips are developing breakthrough applications for new technologies. For example, the company’s Norelco Spectra 8894XL electric shaver uses a one-inch PolyLED display with a plastic substrate rather than glass. The work here—everything from Brand en van Egmond’s handcrafted Broom lamps to SolarCap’s all-weather tiles that glow after dark—shows the impressive quality and variety the lighting field has to offer.
