River Hub at Graco Park
River Hub at Graco Park demonstrates how ecological restoration and community investment can work together to transform a former industrial landscape into a regenerative public asset. Located along the Mississippi River in North Minneapolis, the project reclaims a riverfront site that served the logging and lumber industry for decades and reimagines it as a place where habitat, recreation, learning, and stewardship coexist.
The project is part of a broader effort to restore ecological function along the river corridor. A key milestone was the restoration of Hall’s Island, which had been eliminated during industrial expansion in the 1960s. Reestablishing the historic river channel restored critical habitat for nesting birds, spawning fish, and other river-dependent species while reconnecting the site to its ecological heritage.
Community engagement revealed a strong preference for a park that prioritized habitat creation alongside human use. The resulting landscape is organized around interconnected habitat systems that support biodiversity, strengthen migratory wildlife corridors along the Mississippi Flyway, and provide residents with meaningful access to nature within a dense urban environment. Visitors experience the park as an active ecological system that reveals the interconnected relationships between land, water, plants, wildlife, and people.
At the center of the park, the River Hub building serves as a gateway between city and river. The all-electric, Net Zero Energy building provides flexible gathering space for community-led programs and events while supporting environmental education, creativity, and connection. Its compact footprint, modular wood construction, and timber-clad form reduce embodied carbon and preserve more land for habitat restoration. The building’s stacked timber expression recalls the lumber once stored on the site, creating a tangible link between the riverfront’s industrial past and its ecological future.
River Hub at Graco Park establishes a model for urban infrastructure that restores ecological systems, expands community opportunity, and demonstrates how climate-positive design can generate environmental and social value far beyond the boundaries of a building.
