Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library
The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, designed by Snøhetta in the Badlands near Medora, North Dakota, is an emblematic cultural project that integrates architectural innovation with deep ecological and contextual sensitivity. Situated on a rugged landscape tied to Roosevelt’s own conservation legacy, the library is conceived as a journey through preserved prairie and diverse habitats, connecting visitors physically and symbolically to the natural world that so deeply influenced the 26th president. Its design blends indoor spaces for exhibitions, education, and community engagement with outdoor loops, pavilions, and vistas that encourage exploration and reflection. The building’s orientation, materiality, and spatial narrative reflect a holistic approach to user experience and cultural storytelling rooted in place.
Guided by the principle that “the Library is the Landscape,” the library unifies architecture, landscape, and narrative into a continuous visitor experience shaped by the North DakotaBadlands. The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is one of the most regenerative cultural buildings in the Americas and among the most ambitious projects pursuing the fullLiving Building certification, the world’s most rigorous environmental standard. By embedding architecture within the Badlands rather than imposing upon them, the library creates a destination where history, ecology, and civic engagement converge: a living landscape dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt’s enduring vision of conservation and public service.
