Kanye West’s Design-Blog Faux Pas

When not producing, rapping, mixing it up with the paparazzi, or playing death matches of Connect Four with his celebrity friends, the world’s last Renaissance man, Kanye West, is blogging. About everything. On his site, there are categories you might expect to see (music, fashion, girls, cars) and several you might not (architecture, furniture, lighting). Not that I’m shocked by the hip hop community’s contribution to the design scene—über-producer Pharrell’s Perspective chair comes to mind. But I am amazed by the consistency (daily! in every category!) of Kanye’s posts.
Kanye West on the move and simultaneously blogging?
I know what you’re thinking. But Kanye has insisted for a long time that he doesn’t use a ghost blogger. It’s all him, all the time. When New York recently caught up with Mr. West, he had this to say about the site’s day-to-day operation:
I have two people that I hired and I tell them exactly what I want – it’s just like how a designer would work. I tell them, you know, Surface magazine, Wallpaper, Architectural Digest, Hypebeast, Bossip – go to these different blogs and keep on pulling information. And then they send it to me, and I get like 80 e-mails, and I have to check and go through them.
Totally plausible, right? Right! One slight problem: our friends at Surface don’t have a blog. Luckily, his writers researchers know where to go mining for information. Honestly, the information Kanye’s blog presents is fun and relies heavily on images, so the commentary is sparse (with lots of exclamation points)…I’m just saying he’s not much of a blog digger.
