Thomas Heatherwick Selected to Design Luxury High Line Condo
The new residential complex, to wrap up in 2020, will feature a bubbly facade of faceted bay windows.
Yet another luxury condo will be joining the parade of starchitect-designed buildings flanking Manhattan’s High Line park. This week, real estate giant Related unveiled a pair of residential towers at 515 West 18th Street by the British designer Thomas Heatherwick. It will be his first residential project in New York.
The two towers, which will sit adjacent to Frank Gehry’s IAC Building, will connect beneath the High Line and include approximately 180 residences in all. The taller of the structures will rise 21 stories and offer panoramic views of the Hudson River.
Like Heatherwick Studio’s Zeitz MOCAA completed in Capetown, South Africa, this fall, the buildings’s facade will be punctuated by large bubble-like bay windows. “The studio wanted to create a new kind of panoramic visual connection for the building’s residents and re-conceived the residential bay window as a three-dimensional sculpted piece of glazing that provides light-filled interiors as well as exciting internal moments,” Heatherwick explained in a statement.
The building is expected to open in 2020, according to Related.
Heatherwick’s building will join a spate of new and under-construction residential buildings along the High Line, including those by Zaha Hadid, Jeanne Gang, BIG, and more. Just one mile north, the designer is also working with Related on a monumental public sculpture called Vessel, envisioned as the centerpiece of the company’s Hudson Yards development.
