OMA Will Design the New Museum Expansion

The new building at 231 Bowery (adjacent the existing museum) will add 50,000 square feet of galleries, public circulation, and flexible space for other new programs and “platforms.”

The New Museum’s expansion–announced in 2016 and planned to break ground in 2019–finally has an architect(s): OMA’s Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu.

The new building will replace 231 Bowery, an older structure from 1920 that was purchased by the New Museum in 2008 and is currently home to the NEW INC incubator program. The expansion will connect to museum’s primary home, the 2007 building designed by SANAA’s Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. “Having collaborated with Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa on a number of projects in Europe, it is a real honor to stand alongside their great work of architecture, one of my favorites in the city,” said Rem Koolhaas in a press release

While this isn’t OMA’s first project in New York City, this will be the firm’s first public building in the five boroughs. “Koolhaas has thought deeply about the identity and landscape of our city going back to his landmark book Delirious New York, published in 1978, a year after the Museum’s founding,” said Lisa Phillips, the New Museum’s director, in a press release. According to The New York Times, the New Museum has raised half of the expansion’s $85 million budget.
