Six Ideas That Make Good Design, According to Sam Hecht
Hecht, who co-founded British design firm Industrial Facility, has worked on projects spanning architecture, interiors, exhibitions, furniture, electronics, lighting, appliances, and kitchenware.
I have noticed that lots of designers recently are expressing themselves and their values by way of a list, similar to Dieter Rams’s ten principles of good design. I thought I would share mine:
01 Good design should strive to be invisible: It should not get in the way of use, but rather, make sure that it is pleasurable in use, from the placement in a room to its relationship to what surrounds it.
02 Good design is never temporary: We should all have a feeling of angst if it breaks or if a part wears out, and doggedly try to save it.
03 Good design is like a friend: We are happy for it to stick around, to introduce it to people and take pleasure in its company.
04 Good design is radical only because of its uncompromising essence. Its form and communication are relevant to the life of the product and not simply to the shop.
05 Good design can respect standardized industrial methods yet make the same subject and material worth more.
06 Good design is imagining what the object would be like ten years from now.
