Six Architecture Projects that Raised the Bar on Sustainability in 2021

Featured in Metropolis throughout the year, these projects represent our industry’s best efforts at tackling climate change.

From a courthouse to a retail store, the architecture projects selected for Metropolis’s Sustainable column over the past year take many forms, but they were all designed to meet the highest levels of sustainability certification. Whether cutting embodied carbon by reusing the concrete shell of a former Olympic stadium or building ground-up with mass timber and other sensible materials, these projects go beyond simply cutting energy consumption. The architects of these projects are re-thinking how architecture and design relates to the natural world and believe that design can help us avoid climate catastrophe.
